The Prodigal Son
Luke Chapter 15
A certain man had two sons and one day his younger son asked of him to give the portion
to him that was coming from his father’s estate. The man divided to them his possessions.
Not many days after, gathering up all things, the younger son went away to a distant country.
There he wasted his property, living lavishly. Having spent all his things a severe famine
came throughout that country and he began to be in need. So going, he was joined to one of
the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. He became very
hungry and longed to fill his stomach from the husks which the pigs ate, but no one gave to
him. Saying to himself he said, “how many servants of my father have plenty of bread and I
am perishing with famine. I will go to my father and I will say to him. Father I sinned
against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as
one of your hired servants”.
Rising up he went to his father. He being far away his father saw him and was moved with
compassion. Running, he fell on his neck and kissed him. The son said to him, “father I
have sinned against Heaven and before you, and no longer am I worthy to be called your son”.
The father told his slaves to bring out the best robe and clothe him, and give a ring for his
hand and sandals for his feet. They were also to prepare the fattened calf, so that they may
eat and be merry. For this younger son of his was dead and lives again, and was lost, yet was
found. So, they began to be merry. The older son was in the field, and coming to the house
he heard the sound of many singing. He called one of the servant boys and asked him what this
sound might be. The servant boy told him that his brother came back and his father killed the
fattened calf because he received him back in health. But, hearing this it made the older son
very angry and he did not want to go into the house. So, his father came out and begged him to
come in. The older son answered him saying, “father I have served you for so many years and I
never disobeyed your commandments. And you never gave a goat to me so that I might be merry
with my friends”. His father answered him and said, “my son you are with me
at all times and everything that is mine is yours. But to be merry and to rejoice was right,
for this brother of yours was dead, and lives again; and being lost, also he was found”.
